Outdoor Construction Camera for Ann & Robert H. Laurie Children’s Memorial Hospital of Chicago

M.A. Mortenson Construction is one of the top innovative construction companies with many years of experience and extensive project portfolio worldwide. The new Children's Memorial Hospital of Chicago, built by M.A. Mortenson, which is scheduled to open in June 2012. The 23-story, state-of-the-art hospital will support greater purpose to provide children with access to the most advanced cures, treatments and new technologies performed by the best medical professionals in pediatric medicine and research in a family oriented environment.

M.A. Mortenson contacted Intechnic to in have Outdoor Construction Webcams setup for Ann & Robert H. Laurie Children’s Memorial Hospital of Chicago. The objective of this project was to capture images of the entire building throughout the duration of construction, with a simultaneous image capture for archiving, and a live image broadcast which would be featured on the company’s website for public view.

Upon completion of the project with the use of archived images we’ve created a time lapse video of an entire construction project. This aerial view of the site was taken from a camera positioned across Superior Avenue, looking north and slightly east across the site. To the right of the site is Northwestern Memorial's Prentice Women's Hospital. To the left is the American Dental Association building and the Affinia Hotel.

The biggest challenge we faced while working on this project was Chicago’s infamous weather. The equipment required for this project needed to sustain harsh weather conditions for the entire 2 year construction period. We were able to secure custom, rugged camera housing suitable for our project, and armed with all the required features necessary to combat harsh outdoor environment. One such feature included a unique defroster and defogger which would allow the camera lens to have unobstructed views at all times, regardless of weather conditions. M.A Mortenson’s construction crews were able to install the camera on the roof of the building adjacent to the construction site, and connect the camera to Mortenson’s network. Over a period of two years, we were able to capture the construction, from start to finish, without any equipment failure.
