Once a year I travel to Las Vegas. Not to gamble or to catch a show but to go to Surfaces – the world’s largest tradeshow for manufacturers of flooring.
Me and two of my colleagues spent three days presenting Intechnic’s new state-of-the art online visualization software: Virtual Room Designer (http://www.room-designer.com) to the leaders in the industry.
Our presentation went great and everybody loved it. In fact, we were so much entertained by customers at the tradeshow that someone missed their flight.
I was surprised to see that the tradeshow wasn’t as much affected by the down-spiraling economy as I thought it would be (compared to last year’s show and the rest of Vegas). Long lines to catch a cab or grab something to eat are all gone. Vegas isn’t becoming a ghost town but you can see the slowing economy is hitting it hard.
Yes, there were fewer lavish booths (you could tell everyone had a smaller budget this year) and a handful of larger companies were actually presenting in ballrooms as opposed to the main floor (cheaper) but the attendance seemed high. It is still by far one of the biggest shows in the industry.
Some things still seem exuberant (like $18 sandwiches or $8 coffees) and you still see people gambling at 7 o’clock in the morning. Just as someone wisely put “You come to Vegas, you’ve got to pay the Vegas tax.”.
